I think this is generally much better than the original Gundam movies. Though it still feels a little rushed, it is definitely paced much better. It is still kind of hard to keep track of all of the characters and their motivations, but it is forgivable. Zeta Gundam is definitely my favorite of any Gundam series and one of my favorite shows in general. This does do a decent job trying to cram everything down into a a trilogy of movies, but it really is no substitute for watching the series.
It is definitely nice to see the cameos from all of the characters from the original series. I don’t think it’s necessary to watch the original to enjoy this but it may be a bit confusing, especially trying to really understand Char and Amuro’s relationship.
The new animation for the movie is pretty good. It is very noticeable though so that can be a bit cringe worthy at times. I almost wish they just reanimated the whole thing. It does look much sleeker and smooth than when they use original footage. It is forgivable I guess, but I think it would alienate new viewers and makes it seem less cohesive.
